Allergies And Itchy Watery Eyes

Each year (depending on location), “pollen seasons” cause a flare of symptoms for allergy sufferers across the world. Many of these allergy sufferers have itchy runny noses as a response to the allergens. But also very common, however, is the eye becoming itchy and watery and irritated itself.

Having an itchy eye very strongly points towards allergies. In fact, some people have itchy watery eyes without having any other symptoms of allergies. And it’s possible, especially in bad pollen seasons, to develop allergic symptoms that may not have been noticed before. Because of that, it is always good to think of allergies whenever new irritation develops in the eyes.

In addition to itchiness, allergies also cause redness and watery eyes. Having allergies also exacerbates dry eyes. Allergens cause inflammation on the surface of the eye and this inflammation causes the eyes to dry out more. And so, allergies can cause lots of symptoms of dry eye including blurred or fluctuation of vision. Very frequently this leads to a situation where new sudden dryness starts when the eyes previously felt fine.

Fortunately, treating these allergies can lead to rapid improvement in most people. That is of course, once you recognize that allergies can be causing your new eye irritation or exacerbating dryness.
