What Happens If I Blink During The Procedure?

It is not unusual to have concerns going into any procedure. And this is especially true for procedures on your eyes. It is also not unusual to have a fear about doing something during the procedure that can screw it up. Concerns about blinking during lasik, cataract surgery or any other procedure is very high up on that list of concerns. Fortunately, this is not an issue at all.

All the procedures use a small instrument that goes underneath the eyelids which just holds them in place. Blink as you may, you just won’t be able to blink through this instrument and cause any issues (I like to refer to this instrument as a blink protector). For some, this triggers images from the movie “A Clockwork Orange”, but don’t fear, that example is much more extreme than what we actually do. During the procedure, the blink protector only holds the eyelids back enough to present the cornea.

Before the blink protector is placed, the eye receives numbing drops. While the numbing drops take care of all pain on the eye itself, it is still possible to feel a little pressure sensation in the eyelids from the blink protector. This is not uncomfortable, however, if you try to squeeze down as hard as you can on the blink protector, then you will feel more pressure.

So no need to worry about blinking. During any procedure, you will just be blinking naturally like you always do, it just won’t do anything!
