Does Mini-Monovision Work With Dry Eye?

Mini-monovision is a great way of correcting vision. Optimizing one eye for distance and one for up close unlocks a large range of vision. But a few things must fall in place in order for mini-monovision to work out perfectly and dry eye can throw some small wrenches into mini-monovision plans.

Dry eyes affects vision. When the dry eye is out of control, vision fluctuates. There may only be a short periods of time in between blinking with sharp clear vision. This can make it difficult to perform common tasks such as driving at nighttime or reading. When dry eye is under control, however, vision doesn’t fluctuate and is good!

Mini-monovision works well when both eyes have good vision. When vision fluctuates, things become more difficult to see. This is more noticeable with mini-monovision because the eyes aren't looking at the same objects anymore. When the eyes match, one eye can compensate if the other eye dries out a little bit. But in mini-monovision, if one eye dries out and becomes blurry, vision becomes blurry for wherever that eye was focused because the other eye is focusing on something else. In addition to making it more difficult to see with mini-monovision, this makes it more difficult in the initial stages to adjust to mini-monovision as well.

Once dry eye is fixed, however, than mini-monovision works very well! Once the vision becomes stable and doesn't fluctuate, each eye is able to work at its max ability providing great vision from up close to off and the distance.
