These Are The Improvements In Vision After Cataract Surgery

Cataracts progress very slowly. Because of this, it’s difficult to really notice your vision declining from the cataracts. It’s no secret that cataract surgery leads to some pretty remarkable improvements. So, what can you expect to improve after cataract surgery?

The first things you notice after cataract surgery are dramatic improvements in color and light. The majority of cataracts become yellow-brown in color. You don't notice this (because cataracts cause a slow decline in vision), but this causes a yellow-brown hue to your vision. It is only after cataract surgery that things appear much more vibrant. In fact, many people remark that everything looks so much more blue and purple after cataract surgery.

Everything seems so much brighter after cataract vision. The cloudiness of a cataract also acts as a sort of built in pair of sunglasses (but not a good kind since it makes it hard to see). Once the cataract is out and a clear lens is in place, there is nothing to prevent the full amount of light from entering the eye. This helps quite a bit in low light situations but you may find that you will want sunglasses when you are outside in bright light.

Getting your cataracts removed leads to some pretty remarkable improvements and some exciting new vision opportunities! And it doesn't take long at all.

Can I get out of Glasses with Cataract Surgery?

After cataract surgery, the vision sharpens up. There is no longer a cataract blurring vision. But also for many people, their vision without glasses sharpens up. The lens (and later on the cataract) contribute approximately a third to the ability of the eye to focus light on the back of your eye.

After cataract surgery, a new lens is placed within the eye. This new lens replaces that one-third of focusing power.

We could replace the power of that lens with the exact same power you had before (and you would go to the same prescription you had before cataract surgery), but because we can pick any power we want for that lens, we have the opportunity to improve vision without glasses.

For most people, they get to have sharper distance vision while others desire to keep being nearsighted.

But cataract surgery can also open the door for a lifestyle unrestrained from glasses or contact lenses.

Basic or standard lenses after cataract surgery do one thing very well: correct for a single focal point (typically focusing out in the distance). But we do more than just look off in the distance. During our day, we work at computers, we read up close. If we want to get out of glasses, we must go beyond what a basic intraocular lens does. Smart scientists have discovered ways to make this lens do more!

Premium or lifestyle lenses are specifically designed to get people out of glasses. This category includes lenses which correct for astigmatism and lenses which correct everything. For some patients, this means having the best distance vision possible. For others, this means being able to see both up close and off into the distance. The ideal lens to provide best vision glasses-free vision after cataract surgery varies per person. But yes! Cataract surgery can get you out of glasses! We live in some pretty remarkable times!
