Will I Experience Pain During Lasik?

Getting lasik done is an exciting time. It can also be a stressful time. While the procedure itself is actually quite easy to go through, millions of questions swirl around in the mind of everyone before lasik. On the top of the mind is the wonder whether lasik is painful or not; Because unlike other surgeries, during lasik you are actually awake for the whole thing!

But here is awesome news: Lasik isn’t painful!! 🎉

The numbing drops we use for eyes are super super effective. While the cornea is one of the most sensitive structures in the body, it is very susceptible to the effects of anesthetic eye drops. These drops eliminate any pain during lasik.

Lasik isn’t sensation free, however. These eye drops can’t eliminate certain sensations such as pressure and temperature. Everyone will have a pressure sensation while the lasik flap is being created. And a cool water sensation will also occur from time to time during the procedure.

Lastly, while these numbing eye drops work great for the cornea, they don’t really do much to the eyelids. This can lead to a stretching sensation from the eyelid blink protector (and discomfort if you try to squeeze down as hard as you can on it).

All these sensations aren’t painful. But because stress can change your perception and make you perceive otherwise, a valium or xanax is frequently given blunt the perception of the other sensations. So between all of this, lasik really is a pretty easy pain-free procedure to correct vision
